I would think that it's a good thing for people to purchase travel through their mobiles. Almost any travel agent can get their own website up and running with out much of a cost and get it listed in the search engines.

To the previous two commenters, agreed - its the apps, the real-time info, the geo-location and associated devices like the iPhone and Nokia N97 that will drive this forward faster than anticipated.

We are clearly experiencing a strong shift to mobile computing. With all the new iPhone tools, that change is coming quicker than expected.

I think the direction is plan the trip at your desk and then get updates, maps, directions, real time info (and of course, ads) on your mobile.

Thanks Chas and Vacation blogger, I think you're both dead right that this is a different kind of experience. Certainly not (shudder) brochures that got put on the web that got slapped on a phone!

And thank you Andrew for highlighting how we can access your research - I'll check it out!

Hey there,

Very interesting article indeed! and the follow-on comments are just as insightful. Although I agree that 'critical mass' is a way off, now is the time to start developing a mobile strategy to prevent being left behind by ever more sophisticated mobile consumers.

The team here at EyeforTravel Research have been doing research on Mobile in Travel as part of our Travel School of Mobile educational initiative and we have recently published a comprehensive (and free!) report on how the travel and tourism industry are beginning to leverage the potential of mobile and it includes 16 case studies from travel and tourism companies. You can get the report by signing up as part of the EyeforTravel Research Community through our website.

Travel on mobile will have to look a lot different than travel on desktop (which still has a long way to go).

Likely any good peer to peer application will be a big hit, cause most people want a personal evaluation of anything. Sites, restaurants, even events. I don't see the camera phone as a popular vehicle for information though. If the media made events public to phone browsers....then yes...I imagine more people watching their phones than looking up at the event.

Hi Susan,

The sheer mish mash of mobile browsers, technologies, handsets and indeed transactional options are a massive headache. On the fixed web we haven't got it right - I still see sites that don't render in Firefox for example - are there are barely a handful of variances. The technical variances of mobile are a huge challenge. And I agree, they will vary by region - Asia, parts of Scandanavia mobile payment/wallets is already fully embedded (this is old news there). Germany is rolling out one model, London possibly another.

It will be interesting - and of course, we still only beginning to figure out how to measure it all!

Cheers,

Vicky
