The problem (from a selfish perspective as a consultant) is once people have a bad experience, it tars &amp; reduces trust towards all the genuine skilled professionals.

Frankly it&#039;s tiresome watching clients waste money on poor service, and here in Canada it&#039;s an epidemic! This is of course just my opinion... *grin*</description>

You&#039;re absolutely spot on in terms of the influence this has had on user behaviour.  I would agree that it has mainstreamed a lot of &quot;social media&quot; by bringing it direct to the searcher.

At a personal level, I now see more than half the views of my images on Flickr coming direct from search engines, whereas pre-blended search they would come predominately only from other Flickr users.  

Interestingly Yahoo seems to be performing particularly well (or maybe my images appeal more to Yahoo users)!</description>

Google introduced universal search a year ago and since then I have been interested in how quickly it is going to change users behaviour online. there is no doubt that optimising content for universal search is important (as many eye tracking studies support this opinion). 
From user perspective, blend search is also important. Users get better opportunity to access a huge inventory of content (news, images, videos, etc.). Before the blend search, this content remained ignored in a siginficant part.
