I agree Debbie - and there are also practical, business reasons for suppliers to pursue such as strategy. I don't have the stats to hand, but rich media like video is driving much higher conversion rates, in the same way as positive user reviews are. Let us know how your video guide to Scotland progresses!

I'll add the stats when I remember where I put them.

It’s great to see that there’s a demand and a need for great video content. We’re in the process of setting up a video only guide to Scottish cities, so to see those traffic figures really helps. I think this all ties in with the evolution of web 2.0 and consumer demand for more information. A still photograph and text are never going to portray a real sense of what the experience might be like and consumers are looking for more details before they book. You’re right about the need for a bit of ‘soul and feeling’ in websites and we, as suppliers, should be embracing that.

Since posting this piece earlier today, I came across an interesting post on the Hitwise Intelligence Blog which I think makes the point very convincingly that video is increasingly driving traffic and business.

Hitwise have found - "UK Internet traffic to online video websites increased by 178% between February 2007 and 2008. A Hitwise custom category of the top 25 video websites in the UK accounted for 2.22% of all UK Internet visits in February 2008, equivalent for one in every 45 Internet visits last month."
